So right now in Gatineau, Quebec there is a debate going on about how the CTF should be administered. The private broadcasters, the private cable companies, are arguing that they should not have to help finance programs distributed on public brodcasters. They say that they should be able to dictate what productions receive their taxed monies. Private broadcasters are taxed and the monies collected go into the Canadian Television Fund, which in turn helps finance Canadian made dramatic, comedic and documentary production. These private broadcasters want to be able to dictate where their taxed monies are to be spent. I’d like that courtesy too please. I want my taxes to go to paying for a defense shield against missile defense. Then I want to build Low income housing in the Arbutus corridor, you know, provide some local colour for the “creame de la creame” of Vancouver society. Dream on! I have to agree with Peter Raymont. Our Canadian model of Private – Public partnership is the only way. Why should we here in eden give a shit? Film and Television is practically the biggest industry we have in this city outside of pot. It brings hundreds of millions of dollars every year into our coffers. But it will suffer a real shit kicking if the CTF doesn’t contribute to the industry. Yeah, let’s do that, let’s hold back the money and give it to fewer, richer people and create more poor people. Let’s give yet another body blow to the Arts in this country. Fewer people controlling our cultural landscape. Yeah, let’s do that.
